Family Program

"... drug education requires a united response from the school, family, the community and community agencies."

Schools can't do it alone, Monograph 3, A report from the National School Drug Education Innovation and Good Practice Project, Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training, June 2003

Families play a very important role in the development of a child's attitudes about drug use. Parents directly influence the behaviour of their children through their own behaviours and attitudes, as well as their family relationship. Open communication with parents is essential in building resilience in young people to deal with difficult life issues and in turn reduce the likelihood of drug misuse.

Life Education's Family Forums engage parents in their child's learning and help to build supportive structures within the family unit through open communication. Parents are also able to share views with other parents and children as well as increasing their knowledge on drug related issues.

The forums provide:

  • Opportunities for families to participate in activities which encourage open and honest communication
  • Opportunities for parents to access relevant drug information
  • Practical strategies for families to improve family management of drug and alcohol issues
  • A supportive and relaxed atmosphere where families feel comfortable to open up vital communication lines and discuss important life issues.

By adopting this 'whole community' approach to drug and health education through strong partnerships with schools, families and other community health organisation within our community, Life Education can strengthen the capacity of young people to make safe and informed choices for a healthy future.
